Gorgon City, one of the fastest emerging bass-duos in London, are currently having one of the hits of this spring with their sultry soul track 'Real' featuring singer Yasmin. Their warm, intimate music has been embraced by BBC Radio 1 received support from super trend-watcher Diplo, they have a residency in Ibiza this summer, they've remixed for Basement Jaxx, and now, they're bringing their tunes to Rotterdam this autumn.

Rapper and producer Oddisee and his amazing backing band are a bona fide live hiphop sensation. On top of that Oddisee, who has previously worked with Talib Kweli and Apollo Brown, made a big impression internationally last year with his album People Hear What They See, on which he married solid hip hop beats and rap narratives with rich soul sounds. Oddisee's music has a timeless quality, full of fresh, captivating melodies, and subtle, layered arrangements, while his live shows have been internationally acclaimed.

The third edition of Buma Rotterdam Beats took place in November 2012 and drew a total of over 5,500 visitors. 22-year old Dutch dj and producer Mitchel 'Jameszoo' van Dinther performed at last year's Buma Rotterdam Beats. This year he was invited as one of the guests at the Red Bull Music Academy in New York. In an interview with national Dutch newspaper nrc.next, Jameszoo talks about a freestyle jam session at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple he participated in.
'Last minute I heard I had to perform with Questlove (from The Roots),' says Jameszoo. 'My knees were trembling, my hands were sweaty and I apologised to him before going on stage. I said: you’ve played with much better musicians than me.' The young Dutch producer doesn't remember how the set turned out, he was that nervous.
He does remember great lectures by Bernie Worrell (Parliament-Funkadelic), Rakim and others, and working together with Thundercat in the Red Bull Studio in New York. 'I am a great fan of Thundercat. He has a similar fusion taste and we recorded some stuff together.'

One of the most successful Dutch club acts of the moment, The Opposites, are coming to BRB By Day this year to talk about their career and to share their experience in writing number one-hits, blending musical styles together from rap to new wave to gabber, and rocking the biggest festivals and live venues.
Every year at Buma Rotterdam Beats, hip hop journalist, writer and our creative director conference Saul van Stapele, interviews one of the biggest acts of the Dutch hip hop scene on stage. In our previous editions he invited Lange Frans, Sticks and Fresku on stage for 1-on-1 conversations on their career.
This year his one hour long, interactive interview will be with Twan 'Big 2' van Steenhoven en Willem 'Willy' de Bruin from national club favourites The Opposites. The pair will be involved in other parts of our conference program as well, information on this will follow soon.

They just released their critically acclaimed second album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, which is being praised by all the main music media as we speak. And now we can confirm that British post-dubstep sensation Mount Kimbie is coming to Buma Rotterdam Beats this year.
Mount Kimbie will perform in our BRB By Night-program on November 16 as part of their European tour this fall. Their new album came out last week, and has been lauded for adding new musical ground to their already very progressive musical course.

Rotterdam Beats Keynote speaker Riggs Morales on sampling, selling beats and his career

Rigo 'Riggs' Morales was one of the stand-out guests at Buma Rotterdam Beats last year and as such, he proved to be a great inspiration for many BR Beats delegates. For two days Morales met with countless European producers and performers, treating both unknown talent and established artists with respect, listening attentively to their music and answering their many questions. He also shared his extensive experience on stage during the daytime program at the Shady Records Beat Pitch, and at a Q&A focusing on his career. And now Morales has a new job, as vice-president of A&R and artist development at Atlantic Records, working with a whole new roster of artists including Action Bronson, one of the highlights of the Buma Rotterdam Beats festival program in 2011.
In a recent interview with Blap On The Radio, Morales shared a wealth of information on his career and his new job, offering characteristically solid and relevant advice for producers and music professionals. Back in the nineties Morales worked at leading hip-hop magazine The Source, where he was responsible for the legendary column "Unsigned Hype" in which he put new hip-hop talent in the spotlight for the first time, including a young Eminem. Morales then went into business with the blond rapper from Chicago, and then in 2002, he was instrumental in the signing of 50 Cent to Shady Records, one of the most successful business deals in recent hip-hop history.
In his radio interview Morales explained in detail how the 50 Cent deal was made, how he ended up at Shady Records, and how he views his future at Atlantic Records. Blap On The Radio is first and foremost a show for producers, and Morales has a lot of characteristically hands-on advice for upcoming studio wizards, like how to approach a big name artist, and most importantly what he focuses on as an A&R manager. He talks extensively about a variety of topics, such as his love of sampling, which, although he sometimes finds it hard to clear the samples, he also sees as an important process. ‘Samples feed the music industry,’ he says, emphasizing the vital role that these bite-size chunks of sound play in pop music’s ecosystem, putting a fresh and different spin on an enduringly controversial topic.
There is, says Morales, a lot of laziness among the new generation of producers, and he challenges them to be more prepared to take risks, in order to put ‘soul back into hip-hop production’. "Nowadays it's not so much about the beat," says Morales, "but about the song." Morales emphasizes, however, that this is a 'wonderful time' for music and that he enjoys the fact that more and more artists are singing and rapping on the same track.
A leading Dutch artist in this emerging genre is Mr. Probz, who recently had one of those career changing weeks when his new single Waves became a major hit on the independent scene, while simultaneously also being the song of choice on many influential radio stations. Morales met with Mr. Probz during the latest edition of Buma Rotterdam Beats and listened to a selection of his soon-to-be released work. It probably comes as no surprise that during an hour long Q&A as part of the day program of Buma Rotterdam Beats, Morales singled out Mr. Probz as a highly promising artist and admitted that he had already been following his career for some time.

Nice! Our friend Mike Redman from Rotterdam won the prize for Best Music Picture of 2013 at Hamburg music film festival Ünerhort.
At last year's edition of Rotterdam Beats, Mike presented his book on the making of this feature, 'Sample: not for sale' in our day program. His documentary highlights sample culture and includes musical icons like Bootsy Collins, George Clinton, DJ Shadow and Public Enemy.

BRB by Day
The heart of the event is a more central location than previous years. It moves to the yellow and cultural route near Rotterdam Central. The daytime activities of BRB (BRB by Day) will take place at three new locations: BIRD, BAR Rotterdam and the HipHopHuis. Expect a colorful and interactive program with the key players from the urban bass and beats scene.
